CapCut, formerly Jianying in China, is a free video-editing app. This app allows users to make their video "look professional"[1] The application allows the user to cut, reverse, change the speed, transitions, add music, apply funky stickers, add text, and more.
Sensor Tower reports that the app has received over 250 million installs worldwide from the App Store and Google Play, with nearly 9.5 million from US app stores.[2]
Jianying, CapCut's Chinese sibling, has had success among Douyin users. That pattern is now being repeated outside of China, with TikTok users using CapCut. According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, CapCut has been the No. 1 free app on the US App Store since May 21, and it currently ranks ninth on Google Play in the US. According to App Annie, it ranks first among free iOS apps in 33 countries worldwide.[2]
CapCut and Jianying are both free to use and do not require any in-app purchases. However, many of the app's users appear to be more concerned with functionality.[3]
History[]
Jianying, a video editing app developed by ByteDance, was released on 2017. Eventually, Shenzhen Lianmeng Technology released a version of the app called the Viamaker in other markets. ByteDance purchased the Viamaker for $300 million in 2018.[1][4]
The app went global in April 2020, nearly 11 months after Jianying went public in China. The app was created to make video editing easier for beginners by including a plethora of stickers, soundtracks, and special effects that users can easily insert into their videos.[3]
In December 2020, ByteDance rebranded the app as CapCut, and it has remained the same since. TikTok users can edit and post their videos using ByteDance apps. While TikTok does not technically own CapCut, the two companies share a parent company and are thus closely related. By investing in CapCut, ByteDance has demonstrated how much they believe in TikTok's continued success.[4]
“Jianying has democratised video editing” said Ye Jiatang, a short-film producer in Guangdong. “The app is really catching on among young people, many of whom now want to make vlogs and videos for a living.” “Compared to having to use a bulky professional camera to film and transfer footage on a high-spec PC to edit, using your phone to film and edit on the go is incredibly forcing for most people” he added.[5]
CapCut's unexpected success has propelled ByteDance's second app, after TikTok, to the top of Sensor Tower's most-downloaded chart this year. While TikTok continues to see millions of new downloads, it peaked last year, falling 38% between January 1 and June 23, 2021. However, spending on the app, when combined with its Chinese counterpart Douyin, amounted to US$920 million.[3]
In August of 2022, ByteDance officially released a desktop version of CapCut for both Windows (10/11) and MacOS.[5]
