FlopTok is a niche userbase/community on TikTok that is notable for its specific memes. Its content is comparable to memes from Stan Twitter.

Etymology

'FlopTok' is a mix between the words 'Flop' and TikTok, with -Tok being used as a suffix. On TikTok, 'Flop' is a term used for videos that do not gain a lot of views. The term 'Flop Era' is also regularly used.

History

FlopTok emerged around 2020/early 2021, although the term 'FlopTok' would first start to get used during February/March 2022, when users thought that Floptokers(Floptok accounts) were going to get banned due to a TikTok update on March 7, 2022.

A lot of videos on FlopTok will usually contain jokes related to sexual topics (possibly for shock humor), such as the word 'bussy' being a popular joke. A lot of usernames on FlopTok are also notable for containing sexually explicit references intended to make a humorous effect. Users on FlopTok generally also don't show their face, with most videos being memes where users themselves do not need to appear in the videos.

• iJustine: In July 2021, users started to make memes about the YouTuber iJustine, usually about her obsession with Apple products.
• Aesthetic Warning ⚠️: In early 2021, users began posting compilations of several memes (mostly ones from Stan Twitter) with a humorous background noise or song and text in the video and/or in the caption reading, "⚠️ AESTHETIC WARNING ⚠️," to indicate that a bunch of "aesthetic" videos are about to play. This meme is still trending in some places on TikTok.
• CupcakKe Remixes: In mid-to-late 2021, remixes of popular songs whose lyrics were replaced partially or entirely by lyrics from songs by the rapper CupcakKe became extensively popular on TikTok. However, the the remixes had been popular on YouTube since 2016.
• Haunted House: In November 2021, users would discuss a disturbing sexual video on Twitter that took place in a haunted house.
• Twitter links: In mid 2021 to late 2022, People would either post a random "Stan twitter" video containing either a Twitter link or the person begging for Twitter links, Or a comment containing a Twitter link. These would usually take you to nsfw content on Twitter but occasionally a Family friendly hilarious meme.
• Millie Bobby Brown: Users have regularly joked about the actress Millie Bobby Brown being homophobic, which has been a continuing joke on social media since 2018.
• Crop: The term 'crop' is used when a user wants another user to crop the video they posted, as to make it able to download/screen record the video without a watermark. The term would also usually be accompanied with the word 'flop' hence the term 'crop or flop'
• Lovely Peaches: Memes of the TikToker/Instagramer Lovely Peaches has generally been described as being popular on FlopTok.
• The Badussy War: Since November 2021, users have joked about a fictional war called the 'Badussy War'. The official fandom wiki of The Badussy war can be found here.
• Deborah Ali-Williams: Starting in early 2023, users declared Deborah Ali-Williams the 'queen of FlopTok'. Deborah is the owner of the 'All Peoples Funeral Home' which has a very popular page on the app.
• Kristine Jenster: A Floptok icon, Jenster was a general who died during the Badussy War. This general's name came from American media personality Kris Jenner.
• Payola B: A Transphobic, Homophobic, and Racist celebrity accused of doing payola. Claimed to have been dr💊gging men and robbing them in their sleep. After many videos of her being transphobic and pleading guilty to dr💊gging got viral, FlopTok members began to "remix" the song into many well known and popular songs.

Jiafei

Jiafei refers to a meme that originated back in May 2021, consisting of users mocking Chinese advertisement accounts that were deemed. The name 'Jiafei' reportedly comes from a photoshopped image combining the faces of Jia and Fei from the South Korean K-pop group Miss A. As it was reportedly claimed as a photoshopped image, the “Jiafei” image actually belongs to a Douyin model influencer, (戴戴惹不起): @ddrbq0306, where she took a selfie on a balcony of her home in Sanya, on southern China’s Island province of Hainan three years ago. [1] In relation to the Jiafei meme, a Chinese song by the name of '野花香（DJ何鹏版)' also went viral. Although the meme initially became popular during May of 2021, the name Jiafei itself seems to have gotten popular during November and December of 2021.She is also seen as the creator and queen of Floptropica, the land created by flops world wide.

Some users have accused the accounts that mock the Chinese advertisement accounts to be racist, due to a lot of the accounts mocking broken English. Jiafei also is also known for kidnapping users in videos where an edited video of Xjiemomo is seen walking to the location of the user. Jiafei also has a less popular and disgraced sister named Meifei, who was accused of betraying Badussyland during the Badussy War.

Similarity with Stan Twitter

A lot of the memes on FlopTok have originated on Stan Twitter, with some even regarding Floptok as Stan Twitter's TikTok counterpart.^{[citation needed]}

Brazilian FlopTok

After the success of FlopTok in the United States, this community emerged in Brazil with its topics in videos everyday actions being represented by a funny video. Some of the people who became a meme on the Brazilian FlopTok are Maria José Cardoso, Agatha Nunes and Tulla Luana. Ygona Moura and Flávia Big Big also became memes, but they died on January 27, 2021 and May 8, 2023, respectively.

The community emerged also in Latin America with the "Potaxies", their main floptok icon is Jiafei. The community is also in France with the Baguettasse. The community is well known in France and the Baguettasse have a lot of icons such as the main icon Grace Mbizi and many others.
