The song initially gained popularity on TikTok in mid-2020, after the user @kittykat19893 had remixed the song with a clip from the movie 'The Florida Project', a movie that heavily relates to the song's lyrics. The sound has 52.6K videos as of April 29, 2022.[2] Some users would also visit the locations the movie was shot at while using the sound to record TikToks.[6][7] As early as July 2020, the song was also used in the background of a voice clip of a person who seems to be Cassie from the British show “Skins”.[8][9]
The song gained additional popularity in February 2022, when a trend arose where users would draw the lyrics on pictures of them or another person, along with small doodles.[3] Around May 2022, the song gained popularity under a trend where users would list off things that happened when they were a kid but doesn't happen anymore.[10][4]
