Pudgywoke or Pudgy (@pudgywoke) was a TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter sensation and long-haired chihuahua with a massive following. The dog gained popularity due to their distinctive barking, such as 'OWA OWA' which resulted in unique sounds and voices.
Early and Personal Life[]
Malachy James, their owner, has revealed that he named Pudgy after the dog from Betty Boop. "I instantly had a special connection with him and didn't want to let him out of my sight" he said.[1]
He remembered a friend of his brother's abusing and leaving Pudgywoke at their house for a few days when he was around five years old. By the time the friend called for the dog back, James had grown too attached to him, and the family decided to keep him. Pudgywoke was soon lost for a week, and even after he was found, he was never the same. James believes that Pudge was hit by a car, and that this is what went "wrong" with him.[2][3]
Though their bond is strong, James recalls fond memories of playing with Pudgy, the dog's social media success was unintentional. “I initially meant to post the video [of Pudgy] on my verified account thinking it was time for the world to meet Pudgy,” he explained. “I ended up posting it on my spam account unknowingly, then within minutes it started to take off.”[3]
According to some TikTok users, Pudgy dramatically responds to his owner in the first video by releasing a guttural sound that sounds like a malfunctioning fax machine.[3]
Career[]
Pudgywoke has gone viral due to his various growling and grumbling noises, as well as his distinct “owa owa” bark. Pudgywoke has amassed over six million followers since making his TikTok debut in early December.[2]
Pudgywoke first appeared in public on December 5, when his 18-year-old human, verified TikTok user Malachy James, posted a Stitch reacting to a woman scooping macaroni and cheese from a casserole dish. The video was meant to demonstrate the "wet" sound that a good mac and cheese makes, but it had the opposite effect.[2][4]
“Oh. Oh my. That shit dry as fuck, ain’t that right Pudge” James asked before turning to Pudgywoke, who responded with a noise that can best be described as a cicada crossed with a fax machine or dial-up modem.[2] After the original post quickly went viral, with over 1.5 million views in less than a month, James posted a video attempting to explain why Pudgywoke makes such strange noises.[2]
In either case, despite the “owa owa” barks and other odd vocalizations, James assured fans that Pudgywoke is otherwise just fine. But that was just the beginning of the chihuahua's TikTok reign. In the weeks since, James has posted dozens of videos documenting the life and times of Pudgywoke. Often he attempts to record Pudgy using his earbuds microphone, to mixed results.[2]
The phrase has also appeared on nearly every platform, with “Can I get an owa owa?” being left as a comment on Instagram posts, Twitch streams, YouTube videos, and Tweets. Pudgy even appears in the meme "Thank you for changing my life." At the time of writing, the TikTok tag #owaowa had 45.6 million views and was still growing. Pudgy has certainly earned the title of influencer.[5]
Controversy[]
Pudgy's injury[]

A tweet about Pudgy's injury.
Pudgy's owner, Malachy James, revealed in April of this year that Pudgy had been taken to the hospital for the night after being injured in an accident. Malachy posted on social media at the end of April, “Staying overnight at the animal hospital, I’ll update everyone tomorrow”[6] Another update was posted a few hours later. "Just checked into the other animal hospital that has a neurologist, back with updates ASAP," the tweet says.[7][8]
Since then, there has been complete silence on Pudgy's social media platforms, making it unclear what happened to the long-haired chihuahua. Following the news, many Pudgy's fans took to social media to express their support and love.[7]
Given the ominous news that Pudgy was in the hospital, followed by complete silence, many assumed Pudgy died and Malachy had taken some time to mourn his dog privately. It's also possible that Pudgy is recovering and Malachy isn't posting about him because he wants to focus on getting his dog healthy rather than keeping his followers updated.[7]
A YouTube video, titled "What Happened to Pudgywoke" was later posted by the owner. The video features the owner Malachy James talking about both Pudgy and his cat "Cheddar" (@cheddarwoke) being passed away, which reveals that Pudgy have died.
Malachy James[]
Malachy James, Pudgy's dog owner, was born on March 1, 2002, and is currently 21 years old. Before his fame with Pudgy, he published lip sync, comedy, challenge, and other types of videos on the early TikTok days and earned a crown before it became obsolete. His Instagram account, malachylol, was deleted after amassing over 140,000 followers.[9]
Malachy James keeps his personal and romantic life to himself. Malachy James prefers not to discuss his marital status and/or divorce.[9]
