TikTok or known as Douyin in China, is a video-sharing platform where users can watch videos that are usually around 15 to 60 seconds, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. TikTok itself is an international version of its original counterpart Douyin.
The social media platform is used to create a variety of short-form videos ranging in length from seconds to 10 minutes, ranging from dance to comedy to education. TikTok was launched in the Chinese market in September 2016, but it wasn't available globally until August 2, 2018, when it merged with another Chinese social media service, Musical.ly. TikTok was founded by the Chinese company ByteDance and debuted in September 2016 as “Douyin” (originally A.me) marketed as a video-sharing social networking service similar to Facebook and Instagram (both of which are banned in China). Parent CompanyByteDance (字节跳动) is a global technology company headquartered in Beijing, China, founded in March 2012 by Zhang Yiming. The company operates on a variety of platforms that enable people to create, discover, and connect across languages, cultures, and geographies.The majority of the company's products are social media applications. TikTok, Helo (an Indian social media app), Vigo Video (formerly Hypstar), Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), BaBe (an Indonesian news and content app), and Huoshan (a Chinese short-form video app) are among the company's applications, which are available in over 150 markets and 75 languages. |
